Therapy dog ‘dangerous’? Elgin targets pit bulls, other breeds

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Elgin’s effort demonstrates the difficult balance for communities in trying to protect citizens from dog attacks while avoiding the outcries — and potential lawsuits — from those who say pit bulls are unfairly demonized.

Joe Remijas dresses up his dog Taysia with feather boas and paints her toenails when he takes her on weekly visits to a nursing home and hospital in Elgin.

A certified therapy dog, Taysia has brought cheer to hundreds of ill and elderly people over the past seven years, he said.

Taysia is also a pit bull. So in order to keep her, Remijas will likely have to secure $100,000 in liability insurance and post a “dangerous dog” sign on his property, restrictions the Elgin City Council will impose on dangerous and vicious dogs if an animal control ordinance it is considering becomes law. The measure narrowly won preliminary approval last week.

Making Use of Fruit Before It Goes Bad

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Do your bananas start to ripen faster than you can eat them? Well here’s an easy and healthy solution to making salvaging them instead of throwing them away.

Get a food dehydrator….it doesn’t have to be anything fancy. We recently purchased one at Wal-Mart for $39.98. Although at first you may think that it’s too much money, but in the long run you’ll save money as well as make healthy snacks for you and your dog. (more…)

Wag Worthy Treats

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

When it comes to treats, our dogs are somewhat spoiled. These last few months have been especially great for them. We had the chance to attend two tradeshows and what came with that was an opportunity to bring home a bunch new (and I’m sure tasty) dog treats.

The one treat that they sniffed out first was the bag of Talk To Me Cheese Treats. These little bone shaped cheese treats are great for training. The dogs love the taste so as soon as they see me heading towards the bag, they start to follow me and will pretty much do any trick just to get one. However, just like with dog food, be sure to check the ingredients to make sure your dog isn’t allergic to any of them. treatspacks

Another sample item we brought home was Dogswell’s Vitality Duck Breast. dogswell duck Needless to say, it didn’t last very long….they devoured it! We normally give them the chicken flavor but I’ll have to remember to start buying the duck as well.

We still have lots of sample treats to give them so we’ll be sure to keep you posted on our findings. As much as they would love for us to give them everything we brought back, we are taking it slow so they don’t get sick.
